Towards the end of Ike’s stay at the camp, he noticed air raids by the Russian military going over the camp. He knew that this meant that the war was getting more intense and could possibly end very soon, and he was right. In the war, the Germans had a two front war that they would battle at which ultimately contributed to their defeat. The German soldiers all went to one front to fight while leaving a single soldier to guard the camp. The long awaited day finally came in 1945 when Ike got the opportunity to be free once again. The Russians started to invade Germany which included the camps as they only wanted to capture the Germans responsible for their crimes. When the Russians invaded Auschwitz, they liberated the prisoners from the camp and transported them to Walsh Coat Forest, Germany. This became Ike’s new home for the next six years.
