From that time on, Leon was immersed in his schoolwork, being tutored in mathematics. After graduating from high school, Leon went to study mechanical engineering at the local vocational school and then worked at a local government agency. Not enjoying the work as much Leon went onto further his education enrolling in the University of Paris to study mechanical engineering. He graduated from the university in 1959 and was then called for military duty in the French Air Force. Leon spent the next twenty-eight months in the air force before being released. After his military service Leon married his girlfriend, Sylviane in March 1961. They had two children Olivier and Corinne. In 1963, Rachel came back to France, and for the first time in 13 years the two siblings were reunited. Rachel and her husband offered Leon and Sylviane to help them emigrate to the United States.
