Segregation
Carolinas
Text
After being drafted into the army, Tim decided to travel down to the Carolinas to visit his brother, who was also drafted into the military before being deployed over to Europe. Since Tim had been raised in Chicago all of his life this trip would be the first time that he had to deal with segregation and the laws of the South. On his trip to the Carolinas, Tim boarded a bus and sat in the front two seats. At the next stop a white couple go onto the bus and before they sat down the driver of the bus turned to Tim and told him that he would have to move to the back of the bus. This was a new experience for Tim and he couldn’t understand why he had to move. The thought that ran through Tim’s mind at the time, “Was that he was serving and could possibly die for his country but he couldn’t sit where he wanted to on the bus.” It was the first time Timuel had felt discrimination from his fellow countrymen and it would not be the last time.
