After the war, Henry reunited with his family and they decided to move back to Belgium. There Henry found work as a manufacturer of leather goods, especially women’s handbags. With the fear that the USSR might try and take over Europe, Henry applied for immigration to the United States. Unfortunately, Henry was told that the approval process would take between 5 and 10 years. Since it was going to take so long for Henry to get approved to immigrate to the US, he decided instead to go to the Dominican Republic. His brother, Elie had already reloacted there and offered to house Henry and his family. So, in 1951 the Sontags packed up their belongings and moved to his bother’s house.
