Adding to the Lines

Pomona, California

Jack was then sent to Pomona, California to create assembly lines for the California/Arizona maneuver areas (Jack Nemerov, We Remember History Oral Interview). Upon his arrival, Jack again found the assembly lines already into production in rebuilding engines. The problem they were facing was that the sand in California and Arizona had been chewing up the engines of the rolling equipment (Jack Nemerov, We Remember History Oral Interview). They began stripping down the engines, cleaning them up, and rebuilding everything on them. They built four lines that were about five times larger than the ones in Atlanta. Jack hired about 200 women to work the line. He was impressed by their ability to quickly learn and excel in their work (Jack Nemerov, We Remember History Oral Interview). Jack added about a half dozen more sidetrack stations and had the lines performing at a rapid production rate.
