Mother Saves His Life

Dynow, Poland

A couple of weeks later the German infantry entered Dynow, and Mendel decided to go back to Krosno to see if it might be safe to return home. The next day after Mendel left, the Nazi SS entered the town, rounding up all men between the ages of 16 to 60 years old. Lea, Alex’s mother made the smart decision to tell the SS soldiers that Alex was 14, which saved his life. The men that the SS rounded-up were taken to the local woods and were shot. Soon the family received word that they should return home to Krosno were Mendel was at. Back at home the family started up the glazing business and were responsible for repairing the glass in the German military vehicles. In May 1942, Jews were recruited to start building walls around a certain portion of the city, which would become the Krosno ghetto.
